Calling all holders of oral history collections in Victoria. Are you confident that your collection will be safe in 10, 20 or even 50 years? If not, the Identifying Precarious Victorian Oral History Collections Project wants to hear from you.
Oral history collections hold invaluable insights into our historical, cultural and linguistic past, but many collections – both large and small – exist outside the major collecting institutions and are in danger of being lost.
If you are not confident that your collection will be safe in 50 years, this project relates to you. Your collection doesn’t need to be publicly available, and you don’t have to share your collection with the project organisers to participate – simply tell them about it.
The Identifying Precarious Victorian Oral History Collections Project is a pilot project led by oral historians in the Australian National University team of the Language Data Commons of Australia (funded by the Australian Research Data Commons).
As an important first step, project organisers are compiling a list of at-risk Victorian collections. They are seeking details of relevant collections through a simple online form that must be completed by 31 August 2025.
The aim is to capture vital information about as many precarious oral history collections in Victoria as possible. At the completion of the project an online database and project report will be made publicly accessible online.
This project is proudly supported by both Oral History Victoria and Oral History Australia.
