Teaching Oral History: A Workshop to Train the Trainers

There’s still places left for our train the trainers workshop on the 30th of March.

Just as we need training when we embark on oral history, we need training to teach oral history. This workshop will prepare you to train novice oral historians in a range of contexts, such as volunteers in a community project, students in a school or college project, or participants in an Oral History Victoria introductory workshop. Experienced oral history trainers Sarah Rood and Alistair Thomson will share and discuss their approaches and resources for teaching oral history. We will focus on how to teach the basics of oral history: origins and aims of oral history, project planning and interview preparation, interview and recording skills, interview documentation and oral history ethics. By the end of the workshop participants should have a good idea of what’s involved in teaching oral history and a ‘kitbag’ of teaching approaches and resources. We will assume that all participants have some experience of conducting and using oral history interviews.

Facilitators

Sarah Rood, professional historian from Way Back When Consulting Historians, has been teaching oral history courses in Victoria for many years.
