Expressions of interest for Members’ Voices Session OHV Symposium 2023: Oral history across and within community groups

Each year at our annual symposium we plan a ‘Members’ Voices’ panel. The session is a fantastic opportunity to hear from members and their wonderful oral history work, and to learn from each other’s experiences.
We welcome lightning presentations (about 10 minutes) on the joys and challenges encountered at any stage of a project.

This year our symposium theme is, ‘Oral history across and within communities’. What do we mean by ‘across and within communities’? We hoped this was broad enough to encourage people who might be doing projects where narrators and interviewers are multi-lingual, projects that are based on an organisation (like a community group), oral histories with a group of people with something in common (a shared interested, locality, or identity).

You might like to consider these ideas:
What are the joys and challenges of practising oral history in and across diverse communities?
(Some factors might be related to cultural understanding and/or differences, language, transcription, the impact of ‘insider knowledge’ or complexities of working within, or across a community.)

Submission information:
We invite OHV members to express interest in presenting a lightning paper by emailing us with a 150-word summary, your contact details (including phone number), and what you’d like to present on, by Friday 2nd June. Our email is: contact.oralhistoryvictoria@gmail.com

An announcement on our guest speakers, registration and cost will be circulated soon and available from our events page listing.

The symposium is a hybrid event (in-person with an online option) which we feel is essential for members and friends in regional/rural areas, people with caring responsibilities, or if anyone is sick and snuggling up with a blanket and tea at home is necessary! We encourage you to come in person if you can, but if that’s not possible, we understand!
